Science city

The Science City in Kolkata is one of the most spectacular Science Museum in the country. The sheer enormity of the Science City baffles the first time visitor. On hindsight, one may say that the Science City is a befitting tribute to Kolkata's contribution to the world of Science, courtesy Meghnad Saha, Satyen Bose and others of their ilk.

Science City, the largest science centre in the sub-continent, under the National Council of Science Museums (the apex body of science museums/centres in India), consists of two facilities, the Science Centre and the Convention Centre. The Science Centre complex comprises Space Odyssey, Dynamotion, Evolution Theme Park, Maritime Centre and a Science Park. The Space Odyssey houses India’s first Large Format Film Theatre, Time Machine, 3-D Vision Theatre, Mirror Magic and exhibits on space science, motion, electricity and virtual reality. The Dynamotion Hall has a Butterfly Corner, Aquaria, an exposition on giant robotic insects and host of interactive exhibits on science & technology for both education and entertainment of the visitors.

The main attraction of Science City is the Space Theatre - a circular auditorium with a dome-shaped ceiling which, from the interior, looks like an inverted bowl. Another major attraction is the musical fountain, where coloured jets of water dance to the sound of music.

The Science City has a large convention centre complex with all modern amenities. The main auditorium can accommodate 2300 persons. The side auditorium can accommodate 450 people. In addition there are 8 halls in the adjacent building, the capacity of which varies from 200 to 250 people. All are air conditioned and fully equipped with latest audio visual system. The basement is ideal for poster presentation. There is a huge open field just behind the main auditorium. The lounges (Durga Mandap, Bengal Gallery & Mukta Mancha), food plaza and scientific exhibitions will be organized in this space.

It is a brainchild of the National Council of Science Museums. It's ideal for the tourist interested in the nuts and bolts of science.
