Birla Industrial & Technological Museum

Birla Industrial & Technological Museum

Birla Industrial & Technological Museum, the first Scientific and Industrial Museum in this country have come a long way. With its various galleries, multifarious activities and ever increasing chains of satellite centres, it has become a place where Science happens in front of one’s eyes through animated and interactive models. Side by side, the history of Technology and Industry rejuvenates itself to the visitors through real or scale down replicas.

In its mission to modernize and upgrade its activities and facilities from time to time, BITM is constantly developing new galleries and giving a facelift to the existing ones. In the new millennium BITM has added to its kitty the galleries on Mathematics, Life Science, Biotechnology, Metals, Fascinating Physics, Television. The ones, that got a face-lift, were the Motive Power, Transport, underground Mock up Coal Mine with ‘light & sound show’ and Popular Science. In the queue are the galleries for Children's and on Communication. A large exhibit -Dynamic Globe was added in recent past.

3D Show was added in 2006. In the area of Mobile Science Exhibition, units on Fun Science, Emerging Technologies, Mathematics, Global Changes etc. have generated a lot of interest among the rural masses. An exhibition currently on display in BITM is 'A world in Darkness' for the visually challenged people.

The significance of this museum is the manner in which each scientific subject is represented. For instance, in the Mining Gallery, a simulated experience of going down a coal mine recreated to the utter amazement of the spectators. The mission of the museum is to present science in a manner that is visually appealing.

One latest addition to its already exhaustive list of scientific galleries is the 210 sq.meters metal gallery where a life sized model of an ancient blacksmith working on metal to make sickle is rather artistically depicted. As you move on, you are transported to the mysterious world of ores and furnaces depicted through touchscreens and multimedia presentations.

Not only this, the gallery depicts the fascinating history of tribal iron making method and a miniature model of an eighteenth century Udaipur furnace. Other galleries worth visiting are the stupendous Physics gallery which portrays the contribution of Physics in the last 100 years to the world of science.
