NICCO PARK (JHEEL MEEL)
Ni cco
Park, also known as Jheel Meel, is located in Salt Lake. This is
an amusement park for kids, and has a number of games and rides.
The River Cave Ride is the latest addition and the current attraction.
The park is open to the public from 10.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. daily
during the winter and between 11.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m. daily during
the rest of the year.
THE BOTANICAL GARDENS
This lov ely,
273-acre park of lawns and woods, on the western bank of the Hoogly,
was founded in 1787 by Col. Alexander Kyd of the East India Company.
The Gardens have rare trees from Nepal, Brazil, Penang, Java and Sumatra.
There are towering Mahogany trees, Cuban Palms and an Orchid House.
Mango and Tamarind trees shade the grassy lawns. But the main attraction
of the garden is still the 200-year-old Banyan Tree, the world's largest
of the species, with a circumference of 330m. 600 aerial roots from
the tree reach for the ground in sinewy, twisting lengths. The Botanical
Gardens (or Botanics, as they are called by locals), are the biggest
in Asia, and the second largest in the world, next to the Royal Botanical
Gardens at Kew in England.
