Dakshineswar Temple

Built by Rani Rasmoni in the 19th century. It is here that Sri Ramakrishna
Paramhansa, did his meditation at the Panchabati Garden adjacent to
the temple. A world famous place of pilgrimage.
Dhakuria Lake
An artificial lake in Ballygunge, south Calcutta on Southern Avenue.
Has a rowing club, safari garden children's park and play center
(lily pool), an open air theatre Mukta Manch, swimming pool training
centres, etc, in the vicinity.
Eden Gardens

Synonymous with the cricket stadium that has been built, which can
accommodate about 85,000 people. An early 20th-century park with
a bandstand and a beautiful pagoda.

Fort William
The Military H.Q. of the Eastern Command, constructed by the British
East India Company 1696 and 1702, could accommodate a garrison of
10,000 men. In 1757, East India Company regained after defeating nawab
siraj-ud-daullah its reconstruction. The present building was completed
in 1773.
General Post Office
(GPO) 
Controlling the entire postal system of Calcutta from its central
location near the BBD Bagh area..
Howrah Bridge
One
of the most enduring symbols of Calcutta. A huge cantilever bridge,
strung on two 270 feet high pillars, connecting Calcutta from Howrah.

A national Museum housing rare antiques, armaments, armour, fossils,
stones, paintings of Mughal India, regal dresses/uniforms, rare animal
skeletons, mummies, etc. Entry by ticket.
Jorasanko Tagore House
(Thakurbari)
Rabindranath Tagore was born and died in this house. Headquarters
of Rabindrabharati University, the center for the study of the Indian
Arts. There is a museum too in memory of the great Tagore family.
Kalighat Temple
One legend goes that the name Calcutta is derived from the famous
Kali deity of this temple located at Kalighat in south Calcutta.

Metro
Calcutta's pride, the first and only underground train in India. Runs

National Library

One of the largest libraries in Asia with a collection of rare books
and manuscripts. Located opposite the Zoological Gardens, Alipore.
Nehru Children's
Centre
Built during the late sixties/early seventies. This Centre hums
with children's activities. Has a huge library for children, besides
adaptation of Indian classics in clay models. Located on J L Nehru
Road.
Netaji Indoor Stadium
A fully air-conditioned stadium built in the 1970s for indoor games
and concerts.
Nicco Park
An amusement part with a variety of enjoyable games and rides.

St Paul's Cathedral

TheAnglican Cathedral of Calcutta built in 1847, adjacent to the Birla
Planetarium. Famous for its Christmas Eve service.
Victoria Memorial

Built between 1906 and 1921 in memory of Queen Victoria. This memorial
faces the Calcutta Maidan and houses paintings, manuscripts, and other
objects of historic value in its Museum and Art Gallery. Closed on
Mondays.

Writer's Building

The seat of the West Bengal Government Secretariat, it is located
in B B D Bag. Built during the days of the Raj, this building epitomises
the political revolution of Bengal.
Zoological Gardens
On e
of the biggest zoological gardens in India, it has a vast collection
of animals, birds, snakes and reptiles. It also has a section for
children. It remains a favourite picnic spot during winter and attracts
a large number of emigrant birds. Directly across the main zoo is
an aquarium, with a variety of aquatic life from around the world.
