founded by Sir William Jones in 1784. Its library contains about
20,000 volumes, including 8000 rare Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian and
Hindi manuscripts.
Belur
Math 
Founded by Swami Vivekananda, it is the Headquarters of the Ramakrishna
Math and Mission and is 6.4 kms from Howrah Station on the banks of
the River Hooghly. Its serene prayer hall is ideal for meditation.
Connected from Howrah by train and bus.
Birla Industrial & Technological Museum
Address: 19A Gurusaday Road.
A permanent exhibition of industrial and technological progress in
India. Has a workshop which designs and produces much of its exhibits.
Closed on Mondays.
Birla Planetarium
Address: 96 Jawaharlal Nehru Road.
Located at the top end of Chowringhee, this is the earliest pl anetarium
in the country and even today the most impressive. Its dome houses
a collection of projectors and optical equipments imported from East
Germany. It is the second-largest planetarium in the world. Almost
every evening, there are programmes of a one- to two- hour duration.
Visit the planetarium with children or teenagers, and gaze star-struck
at the twinkling lights on the huge dark sky-like dome above you.
Daily programs in English, Bengali and Hindi from 12 noon to 7 pm.
Entry by ticket. It can accommodate 500 persons. Closed on Mondays.

Botanical Gardens
The
largest and oldest of its kind in India, it covers 109.27 hectares
and is famous for the over 250-year-old Great Banyan tree, 382 m
in circumference, with over 600 aerial roots. There are more than
30,000 varieties of trees and plants. Situated about 9 km from Calcutta,
the Gardens are a good picnic spot and can also be reached by ferry
across the Hooghly from Metiabruz. Open from 7.00 am to 5.00 pm.
