Soumitra Chatterjee

Radio announcer and poet, Soumitra has always been the thinking person's movie actor. His debut was in Satyajit Ray's Apur Sansar (1959), where his performance earmarked him as a talent to reckon with. Much of his film career has been in Ray's movies -- Devi (1960), Punashcha  (1961), Charulata  (1964), Kapurush (1965), Aranyer Din Ratri  (1969), the children's films Sonar Kella  (1974) and Joi Baba Felunath  (1978), Ghare Bhaire (1984), Ganashatru  (1989).  His enactment of the suave Charminar-smoking Satyajit Ray creation, amateur sleuth Felu-da (Prodosh Mitter), has given immortality to the role.

In addition, Chatterjee has performed in stellar films like Ajoy Kar's Saat Pake Bandha (1963), Mrinal Sen's Akash Kusum (1965), Tapan Majumdar's Sansar Simantey (1975), and Ganadevata (1978).
