Road Travel
Calcutta is connected to the National Highway network through G.T.
(Grand Trunk) Road and the Bombay Trunk Road. Roads in Bengal and
neighbouring Bihar are in a poor state with many pot-holes. The
average travel speed in the state rarely exceeds 30 kilometers (19
miles) per hour. It takes 12 hours to reach Dhaka in Bangladesh,
180 kilometers (112 miles) away as several rivers have to be crossed
by ferry. The new international bus services between Calcutta and
Dhaka has started from June '99 , twice weekly from Calcutta (Karunamoyee)
and Dhaka. Detailed itineraries can be obtained from the Automobile
Association of Eastern India at 3 Promotesh Barua Sarani.
