Abracadabra. . . .P C Sorcar's home is a magical delight In Calcutta
circles, P C Sorcar's four-storied ancestral house is called the 'magical
maze'. The magic maestro Sorcar's Calcutta home has 32 rooms and several
staircases woven into a maze-like structure. Mysterious passages and
openings abound. Want to zip up to the third floor? Who takes the
steep stairs? that's for novices. . . or other houses.
Here, you takea short-cut: a little corridor behind most rooms which
connects through to the top floor. There's more magic in the balcony
- a secret passage that leads you to the second floor in the blink
of an eye!
For aesthetic hocus pocus, visit the kitchen. An ornamental spiral
staircase is located bang in the centre of the room. what's up those
stairs? The "real" workplace -- a messy area in every Indian
kitchen, the place for vegetable peels and dirty dishes! The living
room on the first floor showcases some of the magician's most famous
props and collectibles: the rope of the famed rope trick; a sword
belonging to one of the soldiers of Vasco da Gama; a platinum samurai
sword; even a quaint collection of old locks.
The Sorcar bedrooms are probably the most practical rooms in the house.
No hidden mysteries here -- just comfort, and lots of storage space!
The hallmarks of the house are probably the auditorium where he entertains
special friends or guests, and the second floor library which has
valuable manuscripts that he inherited from his great, great grandfather,
the father of the magic empire.
