A number of the nightspots and deiscotheques in the city are inside
5-star joints.
Someplace Else
Park Hotel
Address: 17, Park Street
Visited mostly by the collegians and the sprouting Yuppie class,
this canters between a bar, a disco and a pub. Right now, it is
the most 'happening' place in town (though that's really a seasonal
issue). It is reasonably spacious, as good or bad as pubs in India
get. The Disc Jockey is OK, tends to do a reasonable job at times
though more than often he manages to get people to shy off the dance
floor. Does not oblige with requests too often.
Anti-clock
Hotel Hindustan International
Address: 235/1 AJC Bose Road
A young discotheque which has a basic clientele of college-goers
and the lot which comes by to watch the women. The drinks are surprisingly
better than some of the other joints although there isn't too much
variety to choose from. Pretty decent place in all though, and has
a bit of a dedicated clientele, so most of the people who end up
here seem to know each other.
Moulin Rouge
Address: 31, Park Street
A lot many people, and everyone from Calcutta (who hasn't seen Bombay)
claim that this is the best nightclub in the country. It does have
its charm and dates back a long way to the time that 50 year old
people were young (?).
Moulin Rouge is somewhere between a nightclub and a restaurant,
has a bit of a 'Rick's Cafe' hangover, but the continental food
is excellent.
Olympia
21, Park Street
While Moulin Rouge has always been the numero uno, Olympia has always
lurked in the background as the alternative favourite. It used to
have live bands playing, and some of the biggest names in Indian
contemporary music and the fusion scene have played here at some
point of time. It keeps going through its ups and downs, this month
it's cool, the next it's seedy, all part of the Calcutta spirit.
