The name `St. Xavier’s’
gives an image of prestige and tradition. One of the premiere institutions
of Calcutta, St Xavier's College is known for its academic and non-academic
excellence. Established is 1861 A.D., this college is housed in a
huge building on Park Street, one of the most popular destinations
in the city. The gothic building has large classrooms, unlike most
modern classrooms in other colleges or buildings. The college has
a huge reading room stacked with costly books and journals. There
are also has well-stocked departmental libraries for every honours
subjects taught in the college.
Commerce classes in Xavier's are held in the morning. Arts and
Science classed are held during the day. There are over six thousand
students enrolled in the college. The college offers honours courses
in English, Political Science, Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Economics,
Statistics. Most of the teachers of this college are renowned in
their respective fields. Some of the famous students of this college
are Utpal Dutt and Siddharta Shankar Roy.
St. Xavier’s College is one of the few colleges offering Film Studies
and various N.S.S. programmes which help the students to take up
various social welfare projects. Its drama, literature, and debate
societies regularly win awards at various inter-college events.
