Established in 1955, Jadavpur University has positioned itself as
a premier institution with a vast repertoire of course offerings,
and a reputed list of faculty members.
JU, as it is known throughout Calcutta, stands on Raja S C Mallik
Road in the southern part of the city. The main campus occupies
58 acres. The university has a second campus (26 acres) at Salt
Lake.
Over the years, JU has gained considerable stature vis-à-vis its
older rival, Calcutta University. Some of the areas where JU enjoys
a superiority are a dynamic faculty, innovative courses and programs
(such as Film Studies and Women’s Studies), an integrated campus
with engineering, arts and the sciences in one location, a vibrant
cultural milieu, and a green campus with its lakes and fields.
Academic Structure:
The University has 3 faculties —Engineering and Technology, Science,
and Arts. In addition, a number of Schools and Centres have been
set up for interdisciplinary post-graduate, doctoral and post-doctoral
level research programs in emerging areas.
