Glow Signs - going up in light

You see them almost everywhere, but are you aware of the technology and hard work that goes into making a glow sign so attractive ? This is what goes behind the making of a glow sign:

Firstly, the glow sign is designed on a computer using special software. The design is then accurately cut onto coloured vinyl sheets, with the help of a special plotter. Accuracy of the signs depend on the type of plotter used. Once the designs are cut onto the vinyl sheet, an application tape is pasted onto the design. The vinyl sheet is then pasted on an unbreakable polycarbonate sheet by applying a solution of shampoo and water.

The excess water is removed using a squeeze. This also removes any air bubbles that might be present between the sheets. After a few minutes the application tape is removed. The design is embedded and exteriors are pulled out with the help of tweezers. The remaining parts of the vinyl, which are not required are also removed. The polycarbonate sheet is then put onto the front of a galvanized sheet box, with appropriate lights which are placed inside with the help of channels and screws.

The glow sign is now ready to be lit up. Glow sign makers pay careful attention to minor details in order to get the best results. According to Sudesh Sawant of The Design Shop, "With the changes in technology, acrylic, which was earlier in use, is getting replaced by flex and poly carbonate. These sheets come in all sizes." Talking about the longivity of the signs, he said, " They do fade over the years but the colours can always be restored. The prices of the sheets are quite reasonable and are in the range of Rs. 250 to Rs. 275 per square feet."
